Food Groups

An AHS-2 food group consists of list of NDSR recipes and/or ingredients classified as members of a nutritionally-defined foods. The food group can be constructed to only categorize whole foods (apple) or instead to categorize ingredients within foods (guacamole) . Note, however, that some foods in the NDSR database lack recipes and exist only a single self-defined ingredient. The pizza recipe, for example, could contain pizza as the sole ingredient, rather than the ingredients of flour, tomatoes, spices, cheese, etc. Such recipes can naturally introduce some level of bias when they misclassify the source of a portion of the nutrients.

Food groups, when combined with specific nutrients enable a researcher to investigate the effect of nutrients derived from a specific Food Group. Examples of food group-specific variables are:
* VEGETABLES_GRAM - Grams of vegetables consumed
* WHOLEGRAINS_FIBER - Grams of fiber from whole-grain foods
* DAIRY_CA - Milligrams of calcium from dairy foods
* SOY_DAID - Milligrams of daidzein from soy-based ingredients

This updated food group is based on DAIRYDESSERTS_NOYOG.csv, which was based on DAIRYDESSERTS.csv (with the removal of yogurts).

OTHERDESSERTS.csv located in ''S:\SHARED\RESEARCH\Nutrient Calculation System\SAS Code\Data\Food Groups - Non-overlapping NEW'' contains the same foods, with the addition of 4 foods, when compared with the OTHERDESSERTS.csv located in ''S:\SHARED\RESEARCH\Nutrient Calculation System\SAS Code\Data\Food Groups - Non-overlapping''. This updated food group is based on the first file.
