Mortality

Subject mortality records are obtained by performing linkages with the National Death Index (NDI).

Current NDI Linkage Date: 2015-12-31

More recent records of deceased subjects are available when reported, but these lack the associated cause-of-death variables available from the NDI linkage data.

Tabulated Mortality Data

NDI Variables

The following is a general list of the NDI-associated data available:

* Location (state-level)
* Date of death (YYYY-MM-DD)
* Cause of death
* Underlying cause (1 variable)
* Immediate cause (7 variables)
* Leading cause (b/c/d/e: 7 variables each)
* Contributing cause (7 variables)
* Number of conditions

The underlying and multiple cause of death codes come from the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD–10). All ICD–10 codes begin with an alpha character followed by two or three digits.

NOTE: NDI results do not include decimals in the underlying and multiple cause of death codes. The decimal is implied between the second and third digits for ICD–10 codes.

ICD-10 Codes

The official refference for the ICD-10 codes used in the NDI data can be found at ICD10data.com.
